The top of the Mud Bowl League looked like a classroom chair — five teams all at 2-1, elbows out, nobody getting up. Sunday came and went without the final verdict “The Knot Tightens as One Game Decides the Lead Pack” (last week), and by the time the desks cleared Monday night, the standings had started to mean something again. Danny Kowalski's Cold Brew Crew walked into Week 4 with the best margin in the league, and they walked out still holding it.

That margin, as Tony Malone has it filed, sits at 363 points for against 337 allowed. A twenty-six-point spread over the next-best team's differential, and that team is Alex Fontaine's Regrettables, who came in averaging 115 points a week and left with the same number in the loss column. The tie at the top is still a tie, but it's a different kind of tie now — one where the schedule gets harder for the team that blinked first.
For the bottom half, the shakeout is quieter but real. Two Beers Deep sits at 1-2, the fewest points for in the league at 288, and that's a record. The fewest points for in a full season belongs to Pat Gallagher (288 so far), and the league's lowest single-season average belongs to him too, from last year. That isn't a column about Pat's luck. It's a timeline. The man who finished with the lowest average last year came back and, three weeks in, has the lowest total. He's got a decision to make.
Meanwhile, Grandma's Boys are 1-2 but scored 360 points, more than four of the winning teams. Tommy Wu's roster is averaging 120 a week and has nothing to show for it but a losing record. The record book says that kind of point total usually finds its way to wins. Tommy's may yet.
The league's canon has two entries that feel right for this week. One is the highest single-week score in league history, sitting at 138 points, a mark that was challenged in Week 2 and stands. Another is the Holliday hunch — Deshawn's decision to bench the season's leading scorer on a hunch in Week 3 and win anyway. That kind of thing doesn't show up in the standings, but it shows up in the notebook. I've got it in the notebook.
The logjam at the top will break eventually. The records will shift. But what I keep thinking about is the guy at the diner counter last Friday. He comes in about once a season, always asks how my head team is doing. I told him the head team is 3-0. He said fine, but what about the real league? I pointed at the notebook. That's the real league. He nodded, ordered eggs. The Mud Bowl League has its own pace, and right now the pace is deliberate. By Tuesday morning, two things are true: Cold Brew Crew still breathes first, and the bottom eight are separated by a total of 79 points. That's less than one good week. Somebody's about to have one. I've got my money on the man who hasn't blinked yet.
